Brewing - emissions and waste
Beer filtration
Filter aid precoating is possible with slurry in bright beer
- reduced beer losses and water usage
- will increase pick-up of metal ions into beer, however
Consider crossflow microfiltration for beer filtration
- membrane technique, sometimes preceded by centrifugation
- most commonly polymeric membranes, possibly ceramic
- process economics do not favour kieselguhr plant replacement
- unless new plant or kieselguhr plant worn out
- the compact plant reduces water requirement
- at least 15% less
Centrifugation upstream reduces filter aid requirement
- capital and operating costs of centrifuge
- enables finer grade filter aids to be employed
- product quality benefit
Consider regenerable filter aids
- various have been developed
- added process but some conventional filters will perform the primary process
