Benefits of attending

This one-day course is designed to provide comprehensive training in practical techniques for handling and working with pathogens in a laboratory setting. Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in some of the latest presumptive and confirmation methods for a range of common food pathogens.

On completion of this course delegates will have the skills and knowledge to confidently perform and report microbiological pathogen tests that could be pivotal for food safety.

Intended audience: Competent food microbiologists looking to expand their skillset, senior food microbiologists, experienced laboratory personnel.

We recommend participants attend the online Food Pathogens and Safety: Principles of Identification, Control, and Prevention training course ahead of this training to have an up to date understanding of the theory.

Training Course content

  • Overview of the common foodborne pathogens and their impact on safe food production:
    • Salmonella spp.
    • Listeria spp.
    • Campylobacter spp.
    • Escherichia coli (STEC).
    • Staphylococcus aureus.
    • Bacillus cereus.
    • Clostridium perfringens.
  • Detailed instruction on confirmation methods to accurately identify specific pathogens.
  • Understand the latest ISO methods including rapid technology.

Learning Outcomes

  • Implement effective pathogen detection techniques in the laboratory
Participants will develop practical skills in observing the latest presumptive and confirmation methods to detect foodborne pathogens in food samples, ensuring the accuracy of results at each stage of testing.
  • Apply the latest ISO standards for pathogen detection
Participants will become proficient in observing the latest ISO methods for microbiological testing, including advanced rapid detection technologies, and understand how to integrate these methods into routine laboratory workflows for improved testing efficiency.
  • Accurately confirm and identify specific foodborne pathogens
Participants will learn and practice various confirmation techniques to accurately identify pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, STEC, and others, ensuring reliability and precision in their laboratory work.
  • Integrate rapid technologies into pathogen testing workflows
Participants will understand the principles and benefits of rapid pathogen detection technologies.

These learning outcomes ensure that participants will leave the course with practical laboratory skills, enabling them to confidently conduct pathogen testing and contribute to maintaining food safety in their organisations.
