Benefits of attending
By attending this introductory course, delegates will gain a good understanding of the scientific and technical aspects relating to modified atmosphere packing of a wide range of products. The course is aimed at food technologists, packaging manufacturers and those involved in product and packaging development, particularly those new to modified atmosphere packing.
The course will be delivered live online over the course of one morning (0900 - 1300 hours UK time), participants will be sent log in details for a Microsoft Teams session.
Training Course content
The course will cover the fundamentals of selecting the most suitable gas mixture, packaging materials and the importance of producing a good seal and testing. Key microbiological issues will be discussed, particularly for chilled products, as will the different methods that are available for shelf life testing.
Key topics include: gas selection, suitability of materials, relevant microorganisms, sealing
Course aims
- To provide technical background to enable the selection of the correct gas mixture
- To provide an understanding of the considerations relating to modified atmosphere packing equipment
- To highlight the relevant organisms and the impact of different gas mixes
- To demonstrate the importance of selecting the correct materials and producing a good seal on a pack.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the delegates will be able to:-
- Identify Appropriate Gas Mixtures - demonstrate the ability to select the most suitable gas mixtures for various food products, taking into account factors such as product type, shelf life requirements, and microbial control.
- Evaluate Packaging Materials - analyse and evaluate different types of packaging materials and their suitability for use in modified atmosphere packaging, ensuring compatibility with selected gas mixtures.
- Assess Microbiological Concerns - explain the key microbiological issues associated with chilled products and the impact of different gas mixtures on the growth of relevant microorganisms.
- Apply Sealing Techniques - apply knowledge of sealing techniques to ensure the integrity of packaged products, understanding the significance of creating and testing an effective seal.
- Integrate Packaging Considerations with Equipment - integrate knowledge of modified atmosphere packaging equipment with the selection of gas mixtures and packaging materials, ensuring efficient and effective packing processes.
