Information on the COVID-19 outbreak

The current COVID-19 outbreak, previously referred to as Coronavirus (2019-nCoV), in China, has caused understandable concern regarding the safety of food, ingredients, food containers and packaging originating from areas affected by this pathogen. Although the main cause for concern has been the confirmation of human-to-human transmission, more information is required to fully evaluate the extent of this mode of transmission. On its website, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) states “EFSA is not currently involved in the response to the novel coronavirus outbreak in China since food has not been identified as a likely source or route of transmission of the virus.” It goes on to say however that this is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation with ongoing outbreak situations.

To help members, we have produced a short video summarising the main points around coronavirus and COVID-19 in relation to food and drink.

Information changes rapidly, so we recommend that you check the latest information from the regulatory authorities which are listed below. (The links will take you directly to the appropriate pages.)
