Product Innovation

Here at Campden BRI, we are well known for being the leader on thermal processing within the food & drink sector. Our Process Innovation Team supports our members and clients with consultancy, project work and training activities in the thermal processing area- which focused on heating food, including process development, validation, and optimisation. This encompasses heating (e.g. cooking, pasteurisation and sterilisation) and cooling (chilling and freezing) processes.
 
There may be opportunities to travel with this role as the team travel to our members to conduct process validation trials- UK, Europe and Globally! Expenses paid work trips across the globe, recent trips include- Turkey, Iceland, Jamacia, South Africa, Italy, and Spain. You will be working on a range of different food & drink manufacturing sectors, growing your skills and knowledge!

We are looking for a Chemical Engineer to lead research activity in the process innovation team and support with validation and consultancy contract work, utilising specialist skills such as heat transfer calculations and mathematical modelling.

Position

  • Project managing research and development activities within the area of food and beverage processing (thermal & nonthermal). Project will likely require skills such as engineering calculations, mathematical modelling, coding etc.
  • Planning and managing own contract project work activities to meet project deadlines such as validation or consultancy projects, involving some travel to client sites in the UK and abroad.
  • Responsible for the business development of research and contract work building client relationships, preparing/reviewing quotes.
  • Design and provision of training courses and presentations on external/internal training courses, seminars and symposia.
  • Responding to direct technical enquiries and requests for processing advice.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in process/chemical engineering (a food industry slant would be advantageous). Other engineering or scientific degrees would be considered.
  • Post graduate qualification such as Masters or PHD in relevant subject, and/or several years work experience in relevant role.
  • An awareness of the importance of heat processing in the food industry.
  • Strong and proven, capabilities in process calculations, particularly around heat and energy transfer (ideally some experience using the finite element method).
  • Coding experience in Python and/or MATLAB to facilitate process calculations.
  • Experience using CFD software (for example COMSOL).
  • Time management and financial awareness to facilitate effective project management.
  • Full UK/EU driving licence and eligibility to live/work in the UK. Ability to travel within the UK and beyond.
  • Computer literate: MS Office (particularly Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
